2014 Here I Come!

This past year brought a lot of changes, many of which I did not see coming. Some were great, some not so much. My life is very different than it was a year ago and I've still got a ways to go to get to where I want to be. And so, like so many other people, I've decided that 2014 is going to be my year. I'll be continuing to simplify my life, trying to eat healthier and moving my career along until I'm doing what I love full time.
One of my goals for 2014 has to do with this blog. I'll be trying a new recipe every week (something that I did back when I first went veg) and blogging about it here. I have a few other goals in the works and I'll be sharing them here shortly.

Day seven already? Really?

Can it really be day seven already? The weekend kind of through me for a loop and with working so many hours I seem to have lost track of the days. My challenge has been going well, although not as well as I had hoped. Here's how each area of the challenge has been going;
Shape up: I have stuck to the no eating after 9 o'clock rule and have completed 6 blogilates videos so far. My goal was five so I've passed it already. Most of these videos are fairly short, but man does Cassie get intense! Unfortunately I have not stuck to my goal of doing my squats every day and have been averaging every second to third day, which is still better than what I was doing.
Pare down: The decluttering has slowed, but I did organize my closet this morning (not a small task!) and managed to eliminate a few pieces that I no longer need. I am planning on further paring it down and am once again playing with the idea of project 333. I love it, but I have such trouble sticking to it for the full three months. Perhaps if I take my inspiration from this challenge and shorten the timeline I might be able to see it through.
Tune in: This area is still tricky for me. I have always wanted to be the kind of person who meditates, but I can never get there. Maybe some soul searching is needed to find out if this is something that I actually want or just think that I want. I have been writing lately but not really journaling. I figure that any writing is better than no writing, so I'll take it!

Day Three Review

The first two days are over and I must say, they went pretty well.
Shape up:
I have stuck to not eating after 9 o'clock, so far I have done two pilates videos and I have been staying away from screens before bed. However I have only done my squats one out of two nights.
Pare down:
I have started decluttering my room, starting with my crafting cupboard, but it is slow going. Isn't it always though? I haven't gotten any time off yet, but I will be arranging some soon. I wrote out a new budget and so far I have been sticking to it too.
Tune in: I have been having more trouble with this one. I have meditated once, but I haven't been writing much, other than this entry.
So far I am really enjoying this challenge and am looking forward to pushing myself further to stick to all of my goals.

10 Day Declutter Your Life Challenge

Today I joined Courtney Carver's 10 Day Declutter Your Life Challenge. She gives a great starting point and then gives you room to create your own guidelines. So here are mine.
Shape up:
Food: no eating after 9 o’clock (I work until 7 most nights so dinner tends to be late)Move: do at least 5 pilates videos over the course of the challenge, as well as doing my squats dailySleep: no screens 1/2 hour before bed, I will read an actual paper book before bed insteadPare down:Home: declutter my bedroom, switch over my closet to my fall wardrobeWork: my job is going through a big change right now and has me working a lot of shifts, so I’m hoping to book off at least 2 days this monthMoney: re-do my budgetTune in:Brain: daily 5 minute meditation practiceHeart: start a gratitude journal, reach out to at least 3 people I have fallen out of touch with.

I've put these guidelines up on sticky notes where I can see them to help remind myself. So far I'm sticking to it, but it's only the first day and it's barely even half way over yet! I'll be checking back in with my progress and letting you know how it goes.

Zucchini Harvest

I've been spending more time actually in the garden than writing about it, but today I felt the need for some very modest bragging. This year I am finally getting a decent harvest and felt the need to show off my zucchini.
Here is just a few of them, that I decided to chop up and freeze for use in stir fries and veggie wraps (my favorite!) Here they are pre-chopping and all ready to be frozen.

Looking Back at my First Round of P333


The first two months of P333 went very smoothly and then along came the holidays and all of the stress and busyness that comes with them. Between the endless family parties and get togethers with friends and some unfortunate weight gain my wardrobe didn’t quite cut it. I’m sure had I planned better I would have been able to survive the holidays without having to venture out into the crowds, but I was really expecting to go up a pants size. I blame chocolate.
So long story short, I had no problem sticking to my capsule wardrobe during day to day life but throw in the craziness that goes with Christmas and I caved.
Going forward I am going to approach this a little differently. I will still be picking out 33 items, but I will be reviewing my list at the end of each month. After all, have you ever tried keeping up with Canadian weather?
In case you’ve forgotten (I certainly did) this is my list from last time, as well as a few notes on what did and didn’t work.
1.       White tank – So glad I included this, I wore it so much.
2.       Coloured tank
3.       Black tee – Another favorite.
4.       Coloured tee
5.       Print tee – I actually ended up adding another printed tee during the third month.
6.       Grey ¾ sleeve shirt
7.       Pink blouse – I probably wore this most of all.
8.       Black turtleneck – I didn’t end up wearing this at all. I love this shirt, but it isn’t quite fancy enough to be fancy and isn’t good enough for everyday wear.
9.       Pullover sweater
10.   Grey zip down hoodie
11.   Navy zip down hoodie – This sweater had a weird fit to it and has since been donated.
12.   Gray Roots Hoodie
13.   Beige cardigan
14.   Green dress – I only wore this once or twice and probably would have worn it more if my tights hadn’t given out on me.
15.   Sweater dress – This shrunk in the wash to the point that I can’t go up stairs without showing off my unmentionables and unless I am able to stretch it back out I probably won’t be wearing it again.
16.   Fancy dress – Didn’t wear this one as much as I expected, mainly due to a lack of proper footwear.
17.   Navy pants – Love these pants, but tore them badly climbing into a jeep.
18.   Black jeans – Only wore these once or twice, they are getting very close to being too worn out to wear out of the house.
19.   Blue jeans
20.   Skinny jeans – Love these pants, unfortunately the zipper is broke.
21.   Dress Pants – Practically lived in these during the holidays.
22.   Warm tights – Started piling after too many washings. If you’re going to wear tights, drop the extra money and get a good quality pair.
23.   Yoga pants
24.   Green pants – Wore these out too, though they are at least 4 years old.
25.   Pleather jacket – Another case of buying a cheap product coming back to haunt me, after only one season this coat is worn out.
26.   Black trench – Another holiday essential.
27.   Tan jacket
28.   Winter coat
29.   Knit hat
30.   Wool cap
31.   Striped scarf – Love this scarf! It goes with everything.
32.   Floral scarf
33.   Mittens

This round I will be keeping quite a few of these items on my list, but have also made a few changes. One of the biggest changes is the lack of dresses. I love them, but I rarely seem to wear them, so I have only included my favorite one. I have also added a few more tops and changed out a few pairs of pants. I am just putting the finishing touches on my list and it will be up early next week.

Spring is here and it's time to come out of hibernation.


Lately it seems that the first signs of spring are popping up everywhere I look. There is grass in my yard, I’ve ordered my seeds and I’ve even seen robins. The coming of spring means one thing for me, it’s time to come out of hibernation. I’m preparing for planting again, putting my pen to paper and I’m pushing myself back out of my comfort zone.
So what exactly does spring hold for me? I will once again be taking on the project 333 challenge and will be challenging myself to go microwave free for the next month.
Over the course of the next few days I will be posting more info on these challenges and checking back in with my progress, as well as keeping you posted as the growing season starts up.
